Wu Jiaru’s paintings emerge from a practice of automatic drawing—a method she uses to “unlearn” the rigid, skill-based artistic training she received at the art academy. Her works layer personal memory, mythology, and literature with reflections on identity and modernity, often probing the tension between individual subjectivity and technology. Her works feel improvisational yet deliberate—creating fragmented, psychological spaces that invite open interpretation.
Wu Jiaru (b. 1992) lives and works in Hong Kong. Recent solo exhibitions in-clude Apollo Center at Flowers, Hong Kong (2025); A Brief Digression at HART, Hong Kong (2024); and Emotional Device at P21, Seoul (2023). She has also partici-pated in group exhibitions at the Hong Kong Arts Centre; Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong; UCCA Beijing; OCAT Shenzhen; and Guan Shan Yue Art Museum, Shenzhen. Her works are held in the collections of M+, the Burger Collection, and the Morgan Stanley Art Collection.
